Gabby's Goes Away! A long-time favorite pit-stop of our members has been Gabby's Cafe, located adjacent to the runway at Dalton Airport in Flushing. Apparently, the economic crisis has taken its toll because Gabby's has closed permanently. Many of us will miss the fine meals and companionship we shared there.

Grey Lane recently had a magneto fail. This isn’t dangerous since the magnetos most of use keep firing so long as the engine is running. It’s the next time you try to start the engine that the failure is apparent. After removing and replacing several different magnetos he still could not get the engine to fire on the affected cylinder. Steve Adamczak and Ron Catenac came up with the solution. First, Steve suggested using two feeler gauges, one for each end of the magneto, so that as you tighten the magneto to the engine frame the other end of the magneto could not swing or move and change the gap. Ron watched Grey try to prop-start the engine to check for spark but there was none. Ron deduced that prop-starting did not generate enough speed of the magnet past the magneto to get a spark and suggested pulling the engine through via the rope starter with its mechanical advantage. Lo and behold, with enough speed the magneto worked and Grey got his spark. The engine works just fine now, and Grey put an hour on the engine the first week in February. As a side note Grey found that his engine manual had some bad numbers and instructions for checking the magneto with an ohmmeter. Magnetos that he checked and rejected as unusable work just fine when installed on the engine. Figure that one out!

Ken Fackler and Mark Gray have found a new hangar home for their Kolb experimental light-sport aircraft. Rex Phelps, president of EAA Chapter 13, purchased one of the new hangars recently constructed at Ray Community and has agreed to rent it to Mark and Ken. Look for them in their new home on the westernmost row of hangars in 432-B.

May 15, 2008 - Grey Lane upgrades his comm setup

On the advice of his physician, Grey has purchased a combination helmet and headset and is very happy so far with the new setup. In his words, "I am absolutely amazed at how well the new headphones work. After installing them I flew for about 40 minutes and got to listen as well as transmit and they seem to be much better than the old ones. If anyone wants to buy a used set of David Clarks in near-perfect condition, have them give get in touch with me." Click here to see a picture of Grey with his new equipment.

May 5, 2008 - Steve does it again!

As of this afternoon, Steve Adamczak joined the exalted ranks of those who hold a Private Pilot certification by passing a flawless checkride! As expected, Steve said he was plenty nervous beforehand, but after a few minutes talking with the examiner he felt like he was just having a flying chat with a buddy out in his hangar. After passing the oral exam without missing a beat, Steve and the examiner hopped in the plane for the checkride. Steve performed so well that they only used .8 hours on the meter from start to finish! This is a big day in any pilot's life and flying career, so please take the opportunity to offer him your congratulations.
